Madhya Pradesh has officially declared Madhav National Park in Shivpuri as its ninth tiger reserve, setting a record for being the fastest tiger reserve to be established in India. The reserve was created in just six months, marking a significant milestone in wildlife conservation.Spanning an area of 37,523 hectares, Madhav National Park is strategically located near urban areas, similar to the Bhopal Tiger Reserve. It is home to three adult tigers and two cubs, with plans for further relocation of tigers from other reserves.

Key Highlights

1. Fast-Track Establishment

  • The decision to create the reserve was made during a State Wildlife Board meeting on September 8, 2024, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

  • The central government granted its in-principle approval within a month, and the official notification was issued on March 8, 2025, completing the process in record time.

2. Reserve Details

  • Total Area: 1,751 square kilometers.

    • Core Zone: 375 square kilometers.

    • Buffer Zone: 1,276 square kilometers.

  • Current Population: 3 adult tigers and 2 cubs.

  • Relocation Plan: One tiger each from Bandhavgarh and Kanha Tiger Reserves will be introduced to strengthen the population.

3. Inauguration

  • The reserve was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on March 10, 2025, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Madhavrao Scindia, father of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

A Boost to Wildlife Conservation

  • Strategic Location:

    • Located near Kuno National Park, which recently introduced cheetahs, the establishment of Madhav Tiger Reserve will also enhance security measures for both tigers and cheetahs.

    • Its proximity to urban areas makes it accessible and ideal for eco-tourism.

  • Conservation Goals:

    • The reserve expands the state's network of protected areas, reaffirming Madhya Pradesh's position as a leader in tiger conservation.

    • The addition will contribute to achieving India's larger wildlife conservation targets under Project Tiger.

Eco-Tourism Development

  • Madhav National Park’s inclusion strengthens Madhya Pradesh’s eco-tourism circuit, which already features renowned reserves like Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Pench.

  • Increased tourism is expected to generate employment opportunities and boost the local economy.

With the addition of Madhav Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh now boasts nine tiger reserves, including Kanha,Bandhavgarh,Satpura,Pench,Panna,Sanjay Dubri,Rani Durgawati,Ratapani and Madhav.The state, often referred to as the "Tiger State of India", continues to lead in tiger conservation efforts and remains committed to protecting its wildlife heritage.
