Jagat Prakash Nadda Inaugurates Jan Aushadhi Diwas Week 2025

Union Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers and Health & Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, launched the weeklong celebrations of Jan Aushadhi Diwas 2025 by flagging off vehicles disseminating information about the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) in New Delhi on 1st March,2025. Accompanied by Union Minister of State for Chemicals & Fertilizers, Ms. Anupriya Patel, and Secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Shri Amit Agrawal, the event marked the start of programs aimed at raising awareness about affordable generic medicines.

Creating a Jan-Andolan for Janaushadhi

While addressing the gathering, Shri Nadda called for public participation in the program to create a Jan-Andolan (people’s movement) for Jan Aushadhi. He emphasized that the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to providing quality medicines at affordable prices, thereby benefiting millions of citizens. Ms. Anupriya Patel outlined the plans for the 7th Jan Aushadhi Diwas celebrations, which include weeklong events from March 1-7, 2025, taking place across the nation to raise awareness about the scheme.

 

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) was launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers to make generic medicines accessible at affordable prices. The initiative promotes dedicated outlets, Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs), which sell generic medicines and surgical equipment at 50% to 80% lower prices compared to branded alternatives.

Achievements and Expansion Goals

  • 15,000 Kendras Established:
    As of February 28, 2025, 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been opened, achieving the March 2025 target ahead of schedule.

  • Target for 2027:
    The scheme aims to establish 25,000 Kendras by March 31, 2027.

  • Product Basket:
    PMBJP offers 2,047 drugs and 300 surgical items, covering therapeutic groups like antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, anti-diabetics, cardiovascular drugs, and more. The basket also includes surgical consumables like masks, syringes, orthopedic rehabilitation products, and sanitary napkins.

  • Sales Growth:

    • FY 2023-24: Sales of ₹1,470 crore (MRP), resulting in savings of ₹7,350 crore for citizens.

    • FY 2024-25 (till February 28, 2025): Sales of ₹1,760 crore (MRP).

    • Over the last 10 years, cumulative sales growth has increased more than 200 times, enabling total savings of ₹30,000 crore for citizens.

 

Shri Nadda highlighted how PMBJP has transformed access to medicines in India, particularly benefiting lower-income groups. By ensuring affordable healthcare, the scheme has significantly reduced the financial burden on families, contributing to health equity and well-being across the nation.With these achievements, Jan Aushadhi Diwas 2025 aims to further enhance awareness and participation, ensuring that the benefits of PMBJP reach every corner of the country.
