As the "pharmacy of the world," India supplies affordable generic medicines to over 200 countries.
India is actively collaborating with global stakeholders to address pressing healthcare challenges, from pandemics to digital health solutions, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated on Wednesday. Speaking at BioAsia 2025, a leading life sciences and health-tech event hosted by the Telangana government, Goyal highlighted India's strengths, including a skilled workforce, cost advantages, and a thriving innovation ecosystem. He emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is fostering innovation, strengthening international partnerships, and accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies to revolutionize healthcare worldwide.
As the "pharmacy of the world," India supplies affordable generic medicines to over 200 countries. Goyal noted that the country is shifting its focus from high-volume production to value-driven innovation, research and development, and advanced biopharmaceuticals.
He underscored India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in healthcare manufacturing through initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for pharmaceuticals, bulk drugs, and medical devices, along with the Genome India project. Over the past decade, significant reforms in public healthcare—including free medical treatment for millions, the establishment of Jan Aushadhi Kendras, and the expansion of modern medical infrastructure—have transformed healthcare accessibility across the nation.
Goyal also pointed out that the recent budget provides key concessions on cancer and other life-saving drugs. As India progresses rapidly under PM Modi’s leadership, Telangana has also witnessed major advancements, including the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park in Warangal, an industrial hub in Zaheerabad, and an AIIMS facility in Bibinagar. He also highlighted the establishment of the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad.
Encouraging global investors and industry leaders to explore India's vast opportunities, Goyal reaffirmed the country’s commitment to healthcare and innovation. Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy attended the valedictory session of the two-day event. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who inaugurated the summit on Tuesday, stated that his government aims to develop Hyderabad and Telangana into a world-class hub for biosciences, biotechnology, life sciences innovation, research, manufacturing, and skill development.
