:NITI Aayog's Report Outlines a Framework for Deploying Medical Countermeasures Within 100 Days of Future Pandemic Outbreaks.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and Minister of State for PMO, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Space, Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh, led discussions on India's future pandemic preparedness during an event today.
At the event, Member of NITI Aayog, Dr. Vinod Paul, presented the Minister with a report titled “Future Pandemic Preparedness and Emergency Response: A Framework for Action,” prepared by an Expert Group constituted by NITI Aayog.
The report emphasizes a strategic and proactive approach to pandemic preparedness, focusing on developing medical countermeasures such as diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics. Its recommendations include:
Action Pathways: Outlining measures to deploy medical countermeasures within 100 days of a future pandemic outbreak.
Scaling Manufacturing Capacities: Enhancing production capabilities through forward and backward linkages.
Regulatory Systems: Strengthening regulatory frameworks to support rapid deployment.
Capability Demonstrations: Ensuring readiness by showcasing India’s capabilities.
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized mobilizing India’s Research & Development infrastructure and engaging the industry to address potential pathogens and develop prototype vaccines. He highlighted the importance of cross-departmental collaboration, involving stakeholders strategically and scientifically.
India's One Health Mission, a multi-sectoral initiative, has already enhanced pandemic surveillance systems, focusing on identifying and addressing potential outbreaks.
India’s remarkable achievements during the COVID-19 pandemic were discussed, including:
Administering over 220 crore doses of domestically manufactured vaccines.
Sharing vaccines with more than 100 countries as part of its global outreach.
Developing vaccines using diverse platforms such as mRNA, DNA, Adeno-viral vectors, and inactivated virus systems.
Approving nearly 250 made-in-India COVID-19 diagnostic tests.
Exporting Indian-made drugs worldwide.
Dr. Jitendra Singh credited India’s success during the pandemic to a whole-of-government approach, coordinated efforts across departments, and the direct involvement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who initiated and actively monitored the "Mission Suraksha" research and trial program.
The Minister reiterated India’s commitment to bolstering its R&D capacities and strengthening the industrial ecosystem to respond effectively to any future pandemics. He noted that the recommendations in the NITI Aayog report align with the nation’s resolve to remain prepared for global health challenges.The report has been showcased by the International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat in its “100 Days Mission: Implementation Report 2024”, further highlighting India’s leadership in pandemic preparedness.
