In 2018, the Government of India launched the ‘Ayushman Bharat-Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs)’ to provide Comprehensive Primary Health care closer to people by converting existing Sub Health Centres and Primary Health Centres (in rural and urban areas) into Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres. It announced the operationalisation of 1,50,000 Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) by December 2022. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare successfully achieved this target. The National Health Policy of 2017 envisioned these centres as the foundation of India’s health system. The initiative was later renamed 'Ayushman Arogya Mandir' with the tagline ‘Arogyam Parmam Dhanam’.

The Ayushman Arogya Mandir is serving people in a big way; however, some challenges need to be addressed. Many Ayushman Arogya Mandirs suffer from manpower shortages, often making do with less than half the trained personnel they need. There is also less awareness about the initiative. People are unaware of how the Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are different from the arrangements before 2014.
