AIIMS Delhi enhances patient care with robotic surgery, enabling precise, minimally invasive procedures in general surgery.

AIIMS Delhi has equipped its surgical disciplines department with a state-of-the-art robotic system, making it one of the first government hospitals in India to integrate this advanced technology into general surgery.
Dr. Hemang Bhattacharjee, professor of surgery at AIIMS, emphasized that robotic surgery enhances patient care by enabling complex procedures with exceptional precision, aligning the institute with global medical advancements. "This initiative elevates the standard of care in government healthcare settings," he said.
The robotic system offers a magnified, three-dimensional view of the surgical field and provides unmatched dexterity through robotic arms, facilitating intricate procedures with greater accuracy. This is particularly beneficial for surgeries requiring delicate dissection and suturing in confined spaces, such as colorectal procedures, esophagectomies, and pancreatic surgeries. These operations, traditionally invasive, can now be performed with fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times.
While private hospitals in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai have been using robotic systems for urology and gynecology for years, government hospitals have lagged behind in adopting this technology for general surgery. AIIMS Delhi is bridging this gap, ensuring that patients across socio-economic backgrounds benefit from robotic-assisted procedures, said Dr. Sunil Chumber, head of the surgical disciplines department.
As an academic institution, AIIMS trains over 100 surgical residents at any given time. "The installation of this system allows our residents to gain hands-on experience with the latest surgical technology, bringing our training curriculum on par with top medical institutes worldwide," Chumber added.
